Title: Conflict and Coexistence: Multicultural Images
of Urban Yogyakarta in the First Half of Twentieth
CenturyConflict and Coexistence

Writer: Bambang Purwanto (Department of History Gadjah Mada University)

Description: Abstract
This study is a preliminary exploration of people’s life in
Yogyakarta and its subsidiary town, Kotagede, during the fisrt
half of the twentieth century, while economic, social and political
changes took place creating a new urban environment. As a centre
of Javanese culture and capital city of recently independent
Indonesia, Yogyakarta, together with Kotagede, has offered a
unique occasion for the study of the multicultural image of urban
culture. The emergence of Indonesian nationalism and the revolution
deeply reshaped urban life in Yogyakarta. The town
changed considerably: its agrarian-urban society quickly assumed
a cosmopolitan nature. Although still dominated by Javanese tradition,
Yogyakarta’s urban life was enriched by accepting new
elements from other traditions.
